Kristen Kreuk, who plays Lana Lang in The WB's teen Superman series Smallville, told SCI FI Wire that her small-town-girl character gains a lot of new confidence after traveling to Paris—not to mention a new boyfriend, played by Jensen Ackles (Dark Angel). "Lana this season is actually really great," Kreuk said in an interview. "I'm really excited to play her this year. Not that I wasn't before, but ... my character gets a drastic change this year. She goes to Paris. She has a wonderful, ... fantastic time. So she's being an artist. She has this awesome apartment that I want. ... She meets this guy, this wonderful guy, who's funny and easy, unlike Clark, who was this big, huge heaviness."

Smallville will move away from the long-running Clark (Tom Welling) and Lana relationship, Kreuk added. "The two of them together, ... their issues would just like combine and cause tension," she said. "But [Lana's] happy and confident in herself and interested in art and in style. ... Before, she was kind of directionless. She didn't know what she wanted. And I think ... she's getting perspective on her life."

Kreuk is especially delighted that Lana will get a new wardrobe and a new look. "No more, like, really tight jeans with pink T-shirts," she said with a laugh. "She's a more mature woman, and ... it's so much fun."

And Kreuk has already worked with her new co-star. "I've worked a couple of days with Jensen, who plays Jason, her new boyfriend," she said. "And it's so fun to laugh and to be giggly and to be confident and to walk down the street and to just be in her right now, because she's in a great time in her life. So I'm actually really excited. And the mythology this year will be really interesting. Really interesting. I don't know exactly where they're going, but even in the first episode, [there's] this whole big Egyptian theme I think is going to start coming into the show." Smallville begins its fourth season on Sept. 22 in its regular 8 p.m. ET/PT Wednesday timeslot.

Miles Millar, executive producer of The WB's teen-Superman TV series Smallville , told SCI FI Wire that the producers wanted to bring in new faces for the upcoming season as alternative love interests for Clark (Tom Welling) and Lana (Kristin Kreuk). "We were getting tired of the Clark/Lana relationship," Millar said in an interview during The WB's fall press preview in Los Angeles. "We sort of, like, strip-mined that relationship. So we wanted to bring in some new faces and reenergize the romance in the show and get some new triangles going."

One of those new additions will be Clark's famous future love interest, Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance. Durance is contracted for 13 episodes, with the possibility of more if her character works well within the context of the show. Millar said he is pleased with what he's seen so far. "Erica is stunningly beautiful," he said. "She's clearly a different vibe to Lana. She's very sophisticated and very funny and sassy, energetic and urban. Clark and Erica together, they shot their first scene today, and it's just awesome, the chemistry. So it's going to be really exciting to see that relationship."

Lana, too, will be getting a new potential love interest in the form of Jensen Ackles, previously seen in the canceled Fox series Dark Angel . Ackles will meet up with Kristin Kreuk's character in Paris over the summer. "Jensen also brings a whole new element to the show," Millar said. "He's pretty sexy, and I think when Lana comes back from Paris she's a really changed person. She's come back with a new look and a new attitude, and she's put the past behind her, and she's very confident." Smallville begins its fourth season on Sept. 22 in its regular 8 p.m. ET/PT Wednesday timeslot.

Ackles joins ' Smallville '
Jensen Ackles has been added to the cast of the WB Network drama " Smallville " as a regular. He will play the stubbornly independent heir to a rich Metropolis financial firm who becomes romantically involved with Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk). Ackles , who recently completed filming on his first starring feature, "Devour," co-starred on such series as Fox's "Dark Angel" and "Still Life" and the WB's "Dawson's Creek." He is repped by WMA and Lainie Stolhanske.
